When we made Maggie’s birth announcement of 9 healthy babies, we left one little boy out… He was the runt of the litter and he was born with his eyes completely open. Very little is known about puppies born this way, but they are usually, understandably blind...
He was born at 9.0 oz, and in the first three days, he gained nothing, despite being a vigorous eater…
On the fourth day, he gained .2 oz, but then stalled again. There is very little chance that a puppy like that would survive that long.
We had no expectations for that little peanut to live, but we loved him, and did the best we could for him. I named him Samson, who was strong, but blind at the end of his life…
By halfway through day 5, he seemed to be fading, and I was pretty sure he wasn’t going to make it through that night. I mustered up the little faith that I could for him and asked God to save him…
The next day, he was still holding on, and his weight was up a little bit… A little more that night… A little more the next morning and night…
His last gain was a whopping 1.2oz! He is now tipping the scales at 12 oz! He is a tiny, tiny boy next to his brothers and sisters, but we believe this little cookie is going to make it!
He won’t be a part of Maggie’s litter for adoption…
Unless we find just the right family/person to bring him into their hearts and lives, he will stay here with us.

Here is an update on Cooper (Kona) from the Portz family. We sure do love hearing how the babies are doing as they grow. He's so very handsome!

Look at our pretty boy!!! He's doing great, calming down, listening well and he's awfully sweet. He posed very nicely for our family pictures off leash even with other people, dogs and a horse around. Our photographer was so impressed that she emailed us later asking for our breeder info. I of course passed along your info. I can't tell you how often people ask me for your info.... If you ever get any inquiries from south eastern Wi they were probably sent by me
:-)

Cooper was also a big hit on our Christmas Card, Tim and I always laugh at how many people love him. We can't take him anywhere with out people drooling over him. Can't tell you how many people we have met through Cooper. Even our neighbor across the street who we haven't really talked to in the past 10 years of living in our house has become a regular in our backyard. He's just a great dog!
Thanks for checking in with us, he's perfect! Someday we will get another doodle from you
